Vercel review

5.5of 10
Verdict

Vercel is a good fit if you want a managed home for your web app and can work within its deployment model. Watch the Pro bill: the platform fee is a starting commitment, with usage and additional deploying seats affecting what you actually pay.

Our take

Vercel makes sense when your priority is shipping a web app and you are comfortable letting the platform define how it runs. API, CLI and Terraform support give you ways to automate deployment without administering a server. The boundary is firm: you cannot bring a Docker deployment or log in through SSH to change the environment. For an agent project, distinguish the web interface from the execution service. Choose Vercel for the parts that fit its app model; assess any process needing persistent server access separately.

Pro starts at $20 per month and renews at $20, so an introductory discount expiring is not the central pricing risk. The platform fee includes a deploying seat and a usage credit, while additional deploying seats and usage beyond the credit add to your bill. Viewer seats are free. Transfer, requests, function execution and builds all deserve attention when estimating costs. Treat the plan price as a baseline, then model your actual workload. A busy app and a team that deploys frequently can incur different costs even on the same plan.

Hobby is useful for personal experiments because it is free and hard-capped. It is restricted to non-commercial use, however, so it is not a free launch tier for your business. You cannot buy extra usage on Hobby, and reaching a limit can pause affected features. That trades protection from overage charges for a risk of interruption. Pro is the relevant tier for commercial work and team access. Also budget separately for your database service: Vercel does not supply managed databases, and application hosting does not settle your database backup responsibilities.

Compare Vercel with Netlify and Cloudflare Workers + Pages around your app's deployment requirements and expected usage. Include Render, Railway, Fly.io and Heroku when assessing a broader application stack. Our deciding question is how much code and configuration would need to change if you moved; dependence on platform-specific behavior increases that work. Geographic coverage is a strength, but it does not establish latency for your particular app. The 99.99% uptime commitment applies to Enterprise and excludes non-content components such as the API and CLI. Pro buyers should not treat it as their contractual coverage.

FAQ

Can I use Vercel Hobby for a commercial website?

No. Hobby is restricted to personal, non-commercial use. Choose Pro or discuss Enterprise for a commercial project.

Is Vercel Pro a fixed monthly price?

No. Pro has a platform fee of $20 per month, with an included deploying seat and usage credit. Additional deploying seats and usage beyond the credit can increase your bill.

What happens when I hit Vercel's free plan limits?

Hobby has hard caps, and affected features can pause when you exceed them. You cannot purchase extra usage on that plan, so assess whether an interruption is acceptable before relying on it.

Can I run Docker containers or use SSH on Vercel?

No, Vercel does not support Docker deployments or provide root or SSH access. You can automate through its API, CLI and Terraform support, but workloads requiring server access need a different hosting model.

Does Vercel Pro include an uptime SLA?

The 99.99% contractual uptime commitment applies to Enterprise, so do not count it as a Pro benefit. Its coverage excludes non-content components such as the API and CLI.

Does Vercel include a managed database?

No, Vercel does not supply managed databases. Budget for a separate database service and assess its availability, backup and restore arrangements alongside your app hosting.
