AI agents need persistent processes, room for worker queues and browser sessions, and SSH access to install dependencies and diagnose failures. We rank eligible hosting plans by total cost, developer features, network, reliability and support, giving cost and reliability the strongest influence so you can judge both operating expense and day-to-day practicality.

OVHcloud combines an average monthly cost of $5.08 with root access and managed database options for persistent agent workloads.
Plan: VPS-1 (2027)Hostinger pairs root access with chat support for teams comfortable running their own agent services and databases.
Plan: KVM 2Akamai Cloud offers managed databases and ticket, email, phone and chat support for teams operating agents with persistent state.
Plan: Linode 4 GBVultr offers root access for custom agent dependencies, managed database options, and ticket or email support.
Plan: vc2-2c-4gbDigitalOcean lets you run agent workers with root access while placing persistent state in an available managed database service.
Plan: Basic Regular 4 GiBHetzner offers root access and phone support for teams prepared to manage their agent runtime and database themselves.
Plan: CPX22Contabo averages $4.93 a month, making persistent agent workers inexpensive to host with root access and ticket or email support.
Plan: Cloud VPS 4Providers change prices often, and we regularly verify prices against their own pricing pages, though small differences from current prices are possible. Prices checked 27 Sept 2026. Ranking uses US dollars at a fixed exchange rate; see the methodology.
Start with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for agents that call external model APIs, then measure your actual workload. Browser sessions, loaded documents, worker processes and local databases consume memory; builds, parsing and concurrent tool execution consume CPU. Leave headroom for the operating system and bursts of work. Move up a plan when memory pressure causes swapping or killed processes, or when sustained CPU use delays queued jobs. If workers mostly wait for API responses, check provider rate limits before buying more compute. Local model inference needs separate sizing around model memory and compute requirements.
Shared hosting only qualifies here if the plan meets the resource minimum and includes root and SSH access. SSH access alone does not establish that you can install system dependencies or keep agent workers running, so check those permissions before buying.
You do not need a GPU on your server when your agents call externally hosted models. If you run models locally, size the machine for the model and inference workload separately from the agent runtime.
Choose a server with root access so you can configure the environment, but run the agent under a restricted account. Give it scoped credentials and explicit permissions for the tools and files its tasks require.
A managed database is optional, but it can reduce database maintenance when your agents retain task history, workflow state or shared records. You can run a database yourself if you are prepared to handle updates, backups and restore testing.
A larger VPS helps when local CPU or memory limits slow browser tasks, parsing or concurrent workers. It will not resolve delays caused by external model response times, API rate limits or slow downstream services.
