Claude Code needs a working shell, access to your repository, and enough CPU and memory for the commands it runs. We require at least 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, and root/SSH access, then weigh long-term cost and development features alongside reliability, network quality, and support. Cloud VPS and shared or WordPress hosting must meet those same requirements to qualify.

OVHcloud VPS offers root/SSH access at about $5.08 a month on average, with phone and email support for hosting issues.
Plan: VPS-1 (2027)Hostinger's KVM 2 includes root/SSH access and chat support, fitting a Claude Code workspace where you manage your own services.
Plan: KVM 2Akamai Cloud offers managed database options plus ticket, email, phone, and chat support for the infrastructure supporting your development workspace.
Plan: Linode 4 GBVultr combines root/SSH access with managed database options, letting you separate application databases from the server running builds and agent commands.
Plan: vc2-2c-4gbDigitalOcean offers managed database options alongside your VPS, plus ticket and chat support for hosting problems that interrupt development.
Plan: Basic Regular 4 GiBContabo provides root/SSH access at about $4.93 a month on average, fitting a budget-conscious workspace with ticket and email support.
Plan: Cloud VPS 4Hetzner provides root/SSH access and ticket, email, and phone support, fitting developers comfortable operating their own database services when needed.
Plan: CPX22Providers change prices often, and we regularly verify prices against their own pricing pages, though small differences from current prices are possible. Prices checked 27 Sept 2026. Ranking uses US dollars at a fixed exchange rate; see the methodology.
For standard Claude Code use, model inference runs remotely; your server handles the repository, shell tools, and whatever Claude launches. Treat 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM as a starting point for a modest development workspace. Language servers, browser tests, containers, and databases consume memory, while compilation and concurrent test runs increase CPU demand. Move up a plan when normal work repeatedly triggers swapping, memory-related failures, or sustained CPU saturation. If the server also serves your production app, leave headroom for traffic and keep agent workloads from competing with live requests.
A shared or WordPress plan qualifies here only if it meets the CPU and RAM requirements and includes root/SSH access. SSH access alone does not establish that you can install the tools or run the processes your workspace needs.
You do not need a GPU for standard Claude Code use because model inference runs remotely. Choose CPU and RAM for your builds, tests, and application services; running local models is a separate workload.
Run Claude Code under a dedicated, unprivileged user with access to the repositories and tools it needs. Reserve root access for server administration, and scope credentials before allowing the agent to work near production services.
Yes, you can connect over SSH and run Claude Code inside the VPS environment. Your repository and development tools then live on the server; use a persistent terminal session if you need work to continue after disconnecting.
Budget for Claude Code access separately from hosting. The hosting costs shown here do not include your Claude subscription or API usage.
